READING TOWN CELEBRATES RAKSHA BANDHAN WITH READING FIRE STATION
A Meaningful Visit to Honour Our Local Heroes
Reading Balagokulam (nursery for cultural learning) and Shakha (local branch gathering) came together to organise a special visit to Reading Fire Station in celebration of Raksha Bandhan (sister-brother bond). More than just a festive event , the visit provided children and families a unique opportunity to show gratitude towards the firefighters who dedicate themselves to keep our community safe.
The visit created an environment where young people could interact directly with the fire station crew , gaining insights into the challenging yet vital work that firefighters perform every single day. It was a chance to express respect and to learn about the importance of courage , discipline and service to society.
Discovering the World of Fire and Rescue
The Reading Fire Station team welcomed everyone warmly and offered a tour of their impressive facilities. Swayamsevaks (Males) and Sevikas (Females) learned about the different fire engines and equipment , and were amazed to discover that this station houses the largest inshore capacity boat in the country – essential for water-based rescue operations.
The crew explained how each tool and vehicle is used in specific rescue scenarios , highlighting the precision and training required to handle emergencies. The Bal and Balika (Children) were especially fascinated by the bright red fire engines , ladders , hoses , and the protective gear firefighters wear.
Learning Life-Saving Skills Beyond Firefighting
The day wasn’t only about exploring the equipment; it was also about understanding the depth of training and skills that firefighters must master . The team introduced Swayamsevaks and Samitis to:
- First aid techniques that save lives before medical teams arrive.
- Water Rescue strategies for floods and accidents near rivers or lakes.
- Working at height , including using harnesses and ladders safely.
- Handling hazardous materials to keep the community safe from toxic substances.
- Emergency management and teamwork , which ensures quick and effective responses in critical situations.
These discussion and insights helped the swayamsevaks and samitis realise that being a firefighter is far more than fighting fires – it’s about protecting lives in many different ways.
Celebrating Raksha Bandhan: A Festival of Protection
The highlight of the visit was the celebration of Raksha Bandhan (sister-brother bond). As part of this tradition the Bal (children) tied rakhis (colourful threads) onto the wrists of the firefighters. This symbolic gesture is a way of expressing love , respect and a wish for the safety of those who protect us.
By tying these rakhis , the Bal-Balika conveyed heartfelt gratitude and blessings to the firefighters , acknowledging the daily risks they face to keep everyone else safe. The firefighters, in turn , warmly accepted these threads , creating a touching moment of mutual respect and cultural exchange.
A Day to Remember
The visit to Reading Fire Station was more than just an educational trip; it was a beautiful blend of cultural tradition and civic appreciation. The families and children left with a deeper understanding of what it means to serve the community (samaj) and why it’s important to honour those who do.
As Ramesh Mepa shared at the end of the event:
“Such is the nature of their work that we wish them to be protected from the dangers they face on this Raksha Bandhan Ustav (festival) by tying rakhis to those who protect us and make our lives safer.”
The event proved to be a meaningful celebration of unity, courage , and gratitude that everyone will cherish for year to come.
