Belfast Comes Together for a Cause: The SEWA Walk 2021
An Inspiring Community Effort
On 19th June 2021 , the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) Belfast Shakha organised a family 5k SEWA (charity) Walk in Castlewellan, UK , aimed at supporting pandemic relief efforts in India. The walk took place around the scenic Cyprus Pond trail in Castlewellan , Co. Down .
This charitable initiative saw participation from over 80 walkers, including families , friends and supporters.
Belfast Shakha (a local branch of HSS) volunteers worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds, collecting over £2,200 through donations. The funds were raised through individual efforts , including many participants going door-to-door to collect contributions.
Cultural Participation and Women’s Contribution
One of the most heart warming parts of the SEWA (charity) Walk was the participation of Bal Gana (young girls), who enthusiastically helped with fundraising activities. After the walk the Mahila Nivedita Samiti (Females) of HSS Belfast contributed further by hosting a bake sale. Along with home-baked treats , they offered Indian snacks and traditional drinks , adding a cultural effort to the event.
A Grand Finale at the Indian Community Centre
The concluding ceremony was held at the Indian Community Centre in Belfast on 29th July 2021. During this event, the funds raised were officially handed over to Sewa UK , a charity organisation supporting relief work in India.
The funds were symbolically presented by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mrs. Kate Nicholl , who applauded the efforts of the organisers and expressed her support for HSS UK’s future community work in the city.
What is SEWA?
Sewa is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service”. It reflects the core values of giving without expecting anything in return. Events like the SEWA Walk aim to spread awareness about humanitarian causes while promoting unity and compassion.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for Belfast
The Lord Mayor’s presence and encouraging words reflected strong civic support for future initiatives by HSS UK in Belfast. With such community-driven spirit , Belfast is poised to become a hub of cultural integration and selfless service (SEWA).
