Mahila Milan (Women’s Gathering) – A Special Occasion

In February 2020 , Bradford Savitri Shakha (a local women’s Hindu group) hosted its very first Mahila Milan (Women’s Gathering). The focus of the event was Breast Cancer Awareness – a topic that holds great importance for many women , especially within close-knit communities.

Health Expert Brings Crucial Knowledge

The event welcomed guest speaker Sadie Greenwood , a highly experienced radiographer from Bradford Teaching Hospital’s Pennine Breast Screening Team. Sadie generously gave her time to share valuable information and help remove the fear and stigma often associated with breast cancer.

She explained:

  • Many women have never had a breast screening before.
  • Some don’t know how to check for signs of change in their body.
  • One of the easiest ways to prevent illness is through healthy eating and regular exercise

Sadie also stressed how important is its to attend mammorgram (breast x-ray) appointment and take care of overall wellbeing.

Coming Together to Support Each Other

Around 55 women from the Hindu community attended the event. They shared their personal stories and feelings openly , creating a space of support and understanding. Many spoke about how they felt encouraged to speak up , ask question and overcome feelings of embarrassment.

This type of gathering helped break common barriers in discussing health issues and encouraged everyone to look after themselves and each other.

Giving Back to the Community

Along with spreading awareness , the women also raised £50 , which was donated to the charity Cancer Research UK. This generous contribution shows their dedication not just to learn but also to help others.
