90 Riders from Around the World Complete Sewa UK’s Rickshaw Run to Support Children with Hearing Impairments in India

In a heartwarming show of unity , compassion , and determination , 90 dedicated riders travelled across India in Decemeber 2019 , covering over 2500 km to raise money for children born with hearing loss. Organised by Sewa UK , the epic journey aimed to raise funds for Cochlea Pune , a charitable initiavtive that supports children with cochlear implants and speech therapy.

The Journey Across India

The Rickshaw Run kicked off from the sacred town of KanyaKumari in South India , winding its ways up to Ahmedbad in the North West. Partcipants came from all over the globe – including UK , USA , Australia , New Zealand and India – forming a powerful international alliance united by a common cause.

Riders travelled in a 30 auto rickshaws (commonly known as tuk-tuks) , taking turns to drive in teams of three over a course of 12 days. The adventure was as intense as it was inspiring , with riders braving diverse terrains , unpredictable weathers , and thousands of curious onlookers who lined up in various cities to greet them.

Why Cochlea Pune?

Cochlea Pune is commited to erdicating childhood deafness in India. In many cases , children are born with hearing impairments but can be given the gift of sounds and speech through cochlear implants. These devices allow children not only to hear but also to speak and participate fully in society.

The funds raised during the Rickshaw Run will directly support these life-changing treatments and therapies , ensuring that more children get access to sound and communication.

Community , Culture , and Charity

Even the rickshaws used for the event were donated to charity after the journey , giving them a second life supporting other causes.

The cultural immersion was unforgettable. The convoy was welcomed with traditional aarti (ritual of worship with light) and garlands, and locals offered prasad (blessed food) at various stops. One rider noted that India’s “reality is even brighter than the dreams we had when we signed up.”

Despite the physical toll , riders were fuelled by purpose and hospitality. Accommodation and meals wear often provided by locals who were moved by the initiative.

Massive Fundraising Success

Initially , the fundraising goal was set at £150,000 , but due to overwhelming support and media attention – including features on BBC UK News (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGHFtsjBb98&ab_channel=SewaUK) and other global platforms – the goal was smashed , reaching a total of £250,000.

With this achievement , Sewa UK proudlu announced that they have now surpassed their £1 million fundraising target , marking a milestone in their efforts to support underprivileged children in India.
