On the morning of 13th December 2025, 30 members of HSS (UK) from the Birmingham Branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) came together for a 10-mile charity walk in support of Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Despite the freezing winter conditions, participants gathered at Cannon Hill Park early in the morning with a shared purpose: to raise funds and awareness for the vital work carried out by Acorns Children’s Hospice in supporting children and families facing some of the most challenging circumstances.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK), commonly known as HSS (UK), is a voluntary cultural and community organisation that promotes personal development, community service, family wellbeing, and active citizenship across the United Kingdom. Service to society is an important part of its activities, encouraging people to contribute their time, skills, and energy to causes that benefit the wider community.

The challenge involved walking approximately 10 miles from Cannon Hill Park to the summit of Lickey Hills. Frost-covered paths, freezing temperatures, and strong winter winds made the journey physically demanding. Nevertheless, the participants remained determined and encouraged one another throughout the walk.

The atmosphere was filled with positive energy, conversation, encouragement, and community spirit. The experience demonstrated how a shared purpose can bring people together and help individuals overcome physical and personal challenges.

The Spirit of Selfless Service

The event reflected the Hindu and Indian cultural value of selfless service to others. Service is traditionally regarded as an important way of contributing to the wellbeing of society, without expecting personal recognition or reward.

Indian traditions also place considerable importance on community cooperation, compassion, and collective responsibility. These principles were reflected throughout the walk, as participants supported one another and worked collectively towards a cause that benefits vulnerable children and their families.

For the participants, completing the 10-mile journey was therefore about more than physical endurance. It represented a collective commitment to supporting the local community and making a practical contribution to an important charitable cause.

Supporting Acorns Children’s Hospice

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides specialist care and support for babies, children, and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, as well as their families.

The funds raised through the walk will help support the hospice’s work and enable local families to access care, guidance, and emotional support during extremely difficult periods in their lives.

Through the generosity of participants, families, friends, and supporters, the initiative has raised more than £1,300 for Acorns Children’s Hospice.

The Birmingham charity walk demonstrated how community, physical activity, and a commitment to helping others can come together to create a meaningful impact. It was a powerful example of how people from diverse backgrounds can contribute to the wellbeing of their local community through volunteering, fundraising, and collective action.
