A Festival of Bonds: What is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan (bond of protection) is a traditional Hindu Festival that celebrates the special bond between siblings. Sisters tie a sacred thread known as a rakhi (symbol of protection and love) on their brothers’ wrists , praying for their wellbeing. In return , brother promise to protect their sisters and offer gifts as a token of appreciation.

However, in recent years , this beautiful tradition has extended beyond familial boundaries. It is now also celebrated to express gratitude to those who protect society – such as health workers and police officers.

Cheltenham Kesari Shakha: A Community in Action

Cheltenham Kesari Shakha , a local branch of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), came out in full force to celebrate Raksha Bhandan with frontline heroes. The Swayamsevaks (volunteers) visited the NHS Cheltenham Vaccination Centre and Gloucestershire Police Constabulary to spread the message of unity and gratitude.

Their visits were filled with joy, smiles and deep respect showcasing how Indian cultural values can strengthen local community ties.

Tying the Rakhi : A Gesture of Respect and Gratitude

During the event, children and volunteers tied rakhis to NHS nurses , staff , and police officers. This gesture , deeply rooted in Indian tradition , was warmly welcomed by all. It was not just a symbolic act, but a genuine expression of appreciation for the tireless service provided by these professionals during the pandemic.

Gifts for the Future: Tokens of Love for Children

The Gloucestershire Police gave heartfelt gifts to the participating children – a torch and pen. These symbolic items represent knowledge (pen) and guidance (torch) , reinforcing the values of learning and leadership.

The children’s enthusiasm and joy were clearly visible as they interacted with the police officers and medical staff , proudly taking part in this cultural exchange.

A Message of Unity : Everyone is Family

By tying the rakhis to the police officers and healthcare workers, Cheltenham Kesari Shakha sent a powerful message – that we are all one family (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – “the world is one family”). In these times of uncertainty , such events remind us of the strength found in community , tradition and togetherness.

Conclusion : Culture as a Bridge

This celebration was not just about maintaining traditions , but about building bridges across cultures and generations. The event was a living example of integration , where traditional Indian customs were shared with the wider British community – and celebrated together with mutual respect.
