From HSS UK Parliament Week to Standing for Local Council: My Journey in Amersham

Earlier this month, I had the humbling opportunity to stand as a candidate in my local town council elections in Amersham. It was a moment of reflection, responsibility, and realisation — a step beyond simply voting, into the realm of active civic participation.

Throughout the campaign, I came to truly appreciate what it means to represent your town and community. Standing for election isn’t just about winning; it’s about listening to people’s concerns while out door-knocking, learning how to communicate your ideas clearly, and understanding the issues that matter to your neighbours. It’s a powerful experience that taught me the importance of showing up — not only at the ballot box but also as candidates, organisers, and engaged citizens.

Looking back, UK Parliament Week played a pivotal role in shaping this journey. It introduced me to the workings of democracy in a meaningful and accessible way — from discussions and debates to exploring the different layers of governance. UK Parliament Week empowers people of all ages to understand how Parliament functions and why every voice matters. For me, it sparked an interest that eventually turned into a passion for local public service.

As a swayamsevak of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) UK, and a regular at my local Amersham Maya Shakha, I’ve grown up with the spirit of sewa — selfless service. Standing for council felt like a natural extension of this ethos, allowing me to serve my wider community by helping shape local initiatives, from environmental efforts to community events and the maintenance of shared spaces.

This is why I encourage all younger swayamsevaks and sevikas to engage actively during UK Parliament Week. Ask questions. Be curious. Learn how things work. Your awareness today could be the foundation for your leadership tomorrow. If you’re interested in public service, don’t hesitate to explore it — your voice and vision matter.

UK Parliament Week is an initiative of the House of Commons, House of Lords, and the Speaker’s Office, working in collaboration with Parliament’s Education and Engagement teams. As a proud partner organisation, HSS UK hosts events at over 50 local Shakhas each year, often attended by MPs, councillors and mayors — helping British Hindus understand the political system and how they can contribute meaningfully to public life.
