On Friday, 28th November 2025, the Cheltenham branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) hosted a vibrant community event to mark UK Parliament Week. The evening was designed to inspire the next generation by highlighting the vital roles of democracy, leadership, and civic engagement within British society.

The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including the Rt. Hon. Max Wilkinson, Member of Parliament (MP) for Cheltenham, and Dr. David Willingham, the Mayor of Cheltenham. Their presence underscored the importance of integrating traditional cultural values with active British citizenship.

Debating Identity: Appreciation vs. Appropriation

A central highlight of the evening was a spirited debate featuring secondary school students. They tackled a complex and timely motion:

“This House believes that cultural appreciation is possible without cultural appropriation.”

For the Hindu community, this topic holds significant weight. As Indian culture—including Yoga, Ayurveda, and traditional textiles—becomes increasingly globalized, the distinction between honouring a tradition and stripping it of its sacred context is a frequent point of discussion. The students explored how individuals can engage with and learn from different cultures respectfully, ensuring that the roots and meanings behind traditions are preserved. After a compelling exchange of ideas, a winning team was declared based on the strength of their arguments and their ability to navigate this nuanced social issue.

Voices of the Future: Celebrating Diversity

The younger participants also took to the stage, with primary school students delivering insightful speeches on the theme of “Famous Celebrations.” The children spoke with confidence on a diverse range of holidays, including:

  • Diwali: The Hindu “Festival of Lights,” symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

  • Independence Day: Reflecting on the historical journey of nations.

  • Easter, Christmas, and Birthdays: Highlighting the universal joy found in faith and family milestones.

By presenting these topics side-by-side, the students demonstrated the rich tapestry of multicultural Britain and how Hindu values of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) encourage an appreciation for all paths and celebrations.
