On 7th December 2025, the Sutton branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) hosted an engaging and educational Youth Parliament Workshop, welcoming 52 participants. Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK), often known as HSS (UK), is a voluntary cultural organisation that works to promote the values of Hindu philosophy, community service, and personal development among individuals and families across the United Kingdom.

The event centred around developing critical thinking, public speaking, and civic awareness among young people—skills that are deeply valued within Hindu and Indian traditions. In classical Indian thought, particularly in texts such as the Mahabharata and Arthashastra, open dialogue, ethical leadership, and thoughtful decision-making are considered essential qualities of responsible citizens. This workshop reflected those timeless principles in a modern British context.

The teenage group led a structured and thought-provoking debate on the topic: “Should smartphones be used in secondary schools?” Participants demonstrated confidence and clarity in expressing their viewpoints, while also respectfully engaging with differing perspectives—an approach aligned with the Hindu concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), which encourages mutual respect and understanding.

Younger participants (Bal Gana) were guided by Dr. Param Nanda through an interactive visual overview of the UK Parliament system. This session introduced them to democratic processes and governance, followed by a lively discussion on “Should free meals be provided to all primary school children?” The children displayed impressive awareness and empathy, reflecting the Hindu value of “Seva” (selfless service), which emphasises caring for the wellbeing of others in society.

The event was honoured by the presence of distinguished guests, including:

  • Luke Taylor
  • Dr. Param Nanda
  • Tom Drummond
  • Ed Parsley
  • Sunita Gordon

Their presence and encouragement added great value to the experience, inspiring participants to engage actively with civic issues.

Overall, the workshop highlighted how organisations like Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) contribute to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are rooted in cultural values while actively participating in wider society. By blending traditional Hindu principles with contemporary topics such as education policy and technology use, the event created a meaningful platform for young people to grow as thoughtful, responsible citizens.
