On 25th January, the Macclesfield Branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) brought children and families from the local community together for a joyful celebration of India’s Republic Day and Makar Sankranti.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK), commonly known as HSS (UK), is a voluntary cultural and community organisation that promotes personal development, family values, community service, and active citizenship across the United Kingdom. Through its activities, HSS (UK) provides opportunities for children and families to remain connected with Hindu and Indian cultural traditions while actively participating in wider British society.

The celebration brought together two important occasions from India’s cultural and national calendar.

India’s Republic Day, observed on 26th January, commemorates the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect, establishing India as a republic. The occasion celebrates the country’s democratic principles, constitutional values, and the responsibilities of its citizens. For families of Indian heritage living in the UK, Republic Day provides an opportunity to share this important part of India’s history with younger generations.

The event also celebrated Makar Sankranti, a traditional Indian festival associated with the Sun’s transition into a new phase of its annual journey. The festival is celebrated in different ways across India and is traditionally associated with the beginning of longer days and the changing agricultural season. It is a time for gratitude, renewal, family gatherings, and looking forward with positivity.

Children were at the heart of the celebration and delighted the audience with a vibrant range of performances. They presented speeches, traditional and contemporary dances, songs, presentations, and an interactive quiz, demonstrating their confidence, creativity, and enthusiasm.

The performances provided more than entertainment; they gave children an opportunity to learn about and express their cultural heritage. Passing traditions from one generation to the next is an important aspect of Indian family and community life, particularly for families living outside India. Events such as this allow children to understand the significance of cultural festivals while developing confidence in sharing their heritage with the wider community.

The celebration also reflected the importance of bringing families together. Indian festivals have traditionally provided opportunities for communities to gather, share experiences, celebrate together, and strengthen relationships. The Macclesfield community had also received positive local recognition the previous month following the group’s participation in a UK Parliament Week initiative. This provided another opportunity for children to engage with civic life and develop an understanding of democratic participation in the United Kingdom.
